Recent phylogenetic studies based on separate and combined analyses of nuclear ITS and chloroplast trnL-F nucleotide sequences have shown that the large genus Festuca, as traditionally circumscribed, is a paraphyletic assemblage of several Loliinae representatives. Monophyletic Festuca s.l. splits into two main diverging lineages, the 'broad-leaved Festuca' and the 'fine-leaved Festuca', each encompassing different genera and with several morphologically-intermediate taxa placed between them or at the base ofthe 'fine-Ieaved' clade. AH these lineages include both perennial and annual taxa that show significant and paraHel differences in rates of nucleotide substitution for the two genomes analyzed. Comparative rate analysis indicate that the 'fine-Ieaved Festuca' evolve, in general terms, faster than the 'broad-Ieaved Festuca', and have presumably been derived from them. Relative rate ratios support the minimum-generation-time hypothesis in both lineages, implying the existence of stabilized selection processes for the slow evolving perennials and rapid adaptive mechanisms for the rapidly evolving annuals. High divergences in rate heterogeneity may be responsible for unsatisfactory resolution at the basal node of the festucoid ITS tree. These
results, together with conflicts between the ITS and the trnL-F trees in the placement of several taxa suggests that the existence of past reticulation events, might have profound implications on their classification." Moreover, taxa more or less related to Coleanthus were involved in our study for the maximal accuracy of the molecular phylogenetic analysis. Subtribe Coleanthinae (=Puccinelliinae) is monophyletic according to both datasets, nuclear and chloroplast genes, that probably shows certain evolutionary distance from other Poeae s. str. We confirmed the results of previous morphological studies that placed Coleanthus close to the genus Phippsia but at the same time we have not found any evidences of the affinity between the genus Phippsia and the second putative ancestor, Deschampsia. The clade which contains Coleanthus and Phippsia occupies the sister position to all other genera of the subtribe Coleanthinae. The genus Phippsia produces hybrids with Puccinellia, ×Pucciphippsia, but the relationship obtained by our data is far more distant that was considered before from its morphological features. The genus Puccinellia forms a single monophyletic clade-sister to the genus Sclerochloa and former Colpodium s. l. (Paracolpodium, Catabrosella) which are monophyletic with Catabrosa. In partial contradiction to previous research (Soreng et al. 2015)-we found that the subtribe Coleanthinae is rather distant from two-chromosome grasses in ITS analysis though chloroplast genes show the sister position of the species from the 2-chromosome grasses group, Colpodium versicolor (2n = 4), to Coleanthinae. Also we detected multiple reticulation events in the tribe Poeae s. str. and some of them-within the subtribe Coleanthinae. This can explain an uncertain position of the two-chromosome grasses in relation to Coleanthinae." The present study represents a comprehensive revision of the different taxa in the Sarcocornia genus present in Western Mediterranean Europe by means of morphological, micromorphological and phylogenetic internal transcribed spacer (ITS) analysis. Morphological and micromorphological data were studied from Sarcocornia samples from 113 populations in coastal salt marshes and inland salt pans in Portugal, France, Spain and Italy. Sixteen new ITS sequences were obtained from Mediterranean Sarcocornia species and analysed together with previous reported data. Published karyological, ecological and biogeographical data from Western Mediterranean Europe were also reviewed. The results indicate the presence of a new species, S. lagascae, found growing in coastal Mediterranean areas of the Iberian Peninsula. The species S. fruticosa was found to be absent from the Iberian territories." (source : auteurs) Type de publication : périodique Référence biblio : Fuente GarcÃa V. [Thèmes] Bassin méditerranéenMots-clés : ITS micromorphologie graine Résumé : "This study presents a comprehensive revision of the genus Sarcocornia (Chenopodiaceae) on the Iberian Peninsula based on macromorphological, micromorphological and phylogenetic data, and considering caryological, ecological and biogeographical information. Three species of Sarcocornia have been identified on the Iberian Peninsula: Sarcocornia perennis (Miller) A.J. Scott, Sarcocornia fruticosa (L.) A.J. Scott and Sarcocornia alpini (Lag.) Rivas-MartÃnez. Several authors have proposed that S. alpini is a specific and subspecific rank of S. perennis. Fuente, Rufo and Sánchez-Mata have recently described a new species, Sarcocornia hispanica. The micromorphological and molecular studies (sequence of the internal transcribed spacer region) indicate that there is a broad diversity within Sarcocornia in the Western Mediterranean. This article proposes a new species (Sarcocornia pruinosa) and subspecies (S. alpini subsp. carinata) in view of the new data."
