[Thèmes] Pédologie (sol)Mots-clés : drainage dynamique de la végétation Résumé : "It is well known that Pteridium aquilinun (bracken) is a plant requiring good conditions of soil drainage for active growth. Thus it flourishes in woodlands and on the drier slopes of upland pastures, but is invariably arrested in its advance by impeded drainage.
Recently, it has been shown that the aeration status of soils under Pteridietum is high as indicated by estimation of oxygen diffusion rate (Poel 1960 a, b). While dominant Pteridium is excluded from marshy are-as (where oxygen diffusion rates appear to vary according to the degree of stagnation of water in the soil but are always considerably lower than in Pteridietum soils) small 'islands' of Pteridium are often found. Excavation of the underground parts in typical examples showed that, although few, usually small and unhealthy, fronds are produced, a compact but often elaborate rhizome system exists which has great potentialities for growth (Poel 1951). Furthermore, it was found that these colonies are connected, or have at one time been connected, by rhizomes to the Pteridietum adjoining the flush. The view was put forward that, following general deterioration of drainage, Pteridium had survived locally where aeration conditions remained at a tolerable level.
In the present study, the transition in aeration conditions between Pteridietum and Juncetum acutiflori has been investigated by means of transects of soil oxygen diffusion rate estimations. In addition, quantitative evidence has been sought in support of the writer's hypothesis concerning the cause of survival of Pteridium colonies in flush areas.
This work was carried out during the summer of 1959 at Ballochraggan, Port of Menteith, Perthshire." The sustainable management of soils requires soil monitoring, including biological indicators, to be able to relate land use and management to soil functioning and ecosystem services. Since the 1990s, biological soil parameters have been assessed in an increasing number of field trials and monitoring programmes across Europe. The development and effective use of meaningful and widely applicable bio-indicators, however, continue to be challenging tasks. This paper aims to provide an overview of current knowledge on the characterization and assessment of soil biodiversity. Examples of biological soil indicators and monitoring approaches are presented. Furthermore the value of databases for developing a better understanding of the relationship between soil management, soil functions and ecosystem services is discussed. We conclude that integration of monitoring approaches and data sets offers good opportunities for advancing ecological theory as well as application of such knowledge by land managers and other decision makers." [Thèmes] GrainesMots-clés : fluctuation diurne de température (DFT) profondeur de l'enfouissement des graines Résumé : Background and Aims
Seeds buried in the soil detect burial depth through light and diurnally fluctuating temperatures (DFT) and in this way limit losses due to germination too deep in the soil. DFTs and germination also increase in vegetation gaps. However, dry open environments with high DFTs can also increase seedling mortality, creating conflicting selection pressures for reaction to DFTs. Since this questions the general function of DFT detection, we therefore tested if interspecific differences in DFT detection are related to mortality in different soil depths.
Methods
We buried seeds of ten annual plants including species pairs of increasing and decreasing germination in response to DFTs. Seeds were buried in 5, 10 and 25cm soil depth and exhumed after two different burial times. Seed viability was tested using germination in growth chambers and tetrazolium. We also measured DFTs at these depths using temperature data loggers.
Results
DFT detection was not related to differences in mortality at three burial depths. Three species showed a clear pattern of depth dependent mortality, however inconsistently related to DFT detection.
Conclusions
Depth detection mechanisms are more species-specific than expected. Hence, interspecific differences in seed mortalities are difficult to predict by DFT detection alone and alternative soil depth sensing mechanisms should be explored in future.Type de publication : périodique Référence biblio : Saatkamp A., Affre L., Baumberger T., Dumas P.-J., Gasmi A., Gachet S., Arène F., 2011 - Soil depth detection by seeds and diurnally fluctuating temperatures : different dynamics in 10 annual plants.
