Only one indigenous member (V. spiralis) occurs in Europe. Populations of alien species appeared in some European countries in recent decades and these were named in various ways. To clarify the identity of alien Vallisneria we collected samples for a molecular phylogenetic analysis from six populations in five European countries. We investigated the nuclear ribosomal Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region. Based on our results we found that samples from Belgium, Germany, Hungary and Italy belong to the recently described V. australis, a species native to Australia, while a sample from Russia is identical with V. neotropicalis. We provide a key to distinguish these from other similar species. All populations probably derived from dumped plant parts in the drainage water from aquariums. Most populations of V. australis are established and this species might therefore become invasive in the future. The investigated V. australis populations proved to be not uniform genetically." We aimed our study at comparing the efficiency of two methods in detecting seeds quantitatively from soil samples of four characteristic mud-flat species, i.e. Carex bohemica, Coleanthus subtilis, Elatine hexandra, and Eleocharis ovata : the seedling-emergence and the rinsing method. Additionally, the actual vegetation was described based on 65 phytosociological relevés. Soil seed bank analyses were based on 31 samples representing the vegetation zonation. Mixed soil samples were portioned into 62 subsamples further treated with the two methods in parallel.Analysis of vegetation revealed a typical zonation with Isoëto-Nanojuncetea communities from the centre of dried-up fishponds to Phragmition/Magnocaricion communities at the shorelines. The study species were detected in the soil seed banks of all vegetation types, but seed abundances were generally higher in two fishponds characterised by muddy substrate than in one sandy mesotrophic pond (with the exception of E. hexandra). Therefore beside the water regime and the vegetation cover, additional factors such as soil type are likely to influence the soil seed bank composition of submerged sediments. The quantitative comparison of the seedling-emergence and the rinsing method revealed significantly higher seed numbers by the rinsing method. As we obtained 5.7 times (Elatine hexandra) to 17.5 times (Coleanthus subtilis) more seeds by rinsing, the averaged detection failure across the four study species was at least 89.7% with the seedling-emergence method. In addition to this advantage in the quantitative description of submerged soil seed bank compositions, the rinsing method enables us to use seeds subsequently for conservation management and revegetation purposes." Batrachium are widely distributed and one of the most difficult groups of aquatic plants to identify. Novel DNA-based studies provide an opportunity to elucidate the main evolutionary processes shaping variation in this group and serve as a starting point for further, consistent taxonomic studies of the section. One issue which needs clarification is the role of hybridization in speciation within Ranunculus sect. Batrachium. In this paper we test the molecular character of heterophyllous Ranunculus penicillatus occurring in a few localities in Poland, based on nuclear and plastid DNA sequence data. We found that ITS sequences obtained from this tetraploid taxon displayed a clearly additive pattern between ITS sequences of Ranunculus fluitans and Ranunculus peltatus demonstrating its hybrid origin. The presence of both parental types of matK sequences, even within the same population, shows the multiple origins of the populations studied and suggests that hybridization between R. fluitans and R. peltatus is not rare. In the light of our results we discuss the taxonomic relationships between heterophyllous R. penicillatus and the hybrid R. fluitans × R. peltatus. In addition, based on molecular analysis of 44 individuals of Ranunculus sect. Batrachium representing different morphotypes and originating from different areas, we discuss the resultant genetic groups in the relation to traditionally recognized taxa." Two subspecies of L. dubia, subsp. major and subsp. dubia, are usually recognized in Japan but they are both regarded as synonyms of L. dubia elsewhere. In a cluster analysis based on AFLP, most L. dubia subsp. major formed a separate cluster from L. dubia subsp. dubia although 11% of haplotypes classified using AFLP were not coincident with classification using the shape of leaf bases, which is the commonly used identification trait. Artificial F1 plants between L. procumbens and L. dubia subsp. major, and between L. procumbens and L. dubia subsp. dubia did not produce seed. Forty percent of capsules produced by F1 plants from these two subspecies were slimmer and 80% pollen were sterile in slimmer capsules. However, seed number of most F1 capsules was not different from that of self-fertilized plants, suggesting that there was no complete reproductive isolation between the subspecies. Natural hybridization of these subspecies may have occurred but we are not aware of it because F1 plants are rare and F2 plants are indistinguishable from these subspecies." An evaluation at the European level based on IUCN criteria showed that the extent of occurrence (EOO) of M. quadrifolia has decreased from5,930,000 km2 to 5,774,000 km2 during the past decade, whereas its area of occupancy (AOO) has decreased from 620 to 400 km2 (approximately 35.5%). These findings allowed the species to be upgraded from the IUCN classification of Near Threatened to Vulnerable. The agricultural chemical treatments seem to be the main extinction cause of M. quadrifolia, therefore we performed toxicological with 7 most common rice herbicides. Young plantlets were incubated for 96h with each herbicide at three different concentrations : TQ (Tale Quale, chosen in accordance with the suggested dose for rice fields described on the product label), 1:100 and1:1.000. Results suggested that survival of the plantlets depended on the herbicide and concentration used, and ranged between 0 and 80%, and no survival at ambient concentrations for 4(Aura, Aura + Dash, Clincher and Viper) out of the 8 chosen herbicides. We conclude that herbicides represent one of the principal threats to the survival of this species. Finally, a DNA analysis using the AFLP approach was employed to identify the most suitable genetic pool for plant reintroduction efforts. The data show that the analysed populations of M. quadrifolia suffered from low genetic variability (Nei’s gene diversity varied from 0.025 to 0.036). However, the analysis of the distribution of genetic variability suggested that 4 populations were characterised by different genetic traitst that are useful in defining a genetic pool for plant conservation. This study highlights a strategy for implementing a plan of action for species growing in agro-ecosystems based on an integrated approach that is able to clarify the species conservation status, the principal threat factor and the genetic pool to be used for species conservation and reintroduction."
