"In this article, we discuss the relationships between plant sociology and ecology and highlight the potential of plant sociology for ecological modelling and environmental assessment. The classification criteria for plant communities (characteristic combination of species, specific relationships with the physical environment, particular chorological and dynamical features) assign strong indicator value to phytosociological units. Moreover, the modern approach of plant sociology, which spans from individual communities to vegetation series and geosigmeta, offers the opportunity to interact under a landscape ecological perspective. Within this general context, we particularly refer to the field of ecological land classification and present a research project on the ecoregions of Italy, which is based on the National Map of Vegetation Series and on bioclimatic, biogeographical, lithological, and geomorphological data."

"The work deals with the confrontation of two approaches in vegetation science, which already had their origins at the beginning of the past century: gradient analysis and classification of communities. We tested whether samples are arranged along gradients according to the individualistic or the integrative concept. We studied gradients in several case studies – successional, altitudinal, gradient of human impact, phenological, macroecological, (phyto)geographical – and tried to detect the main gradient (by direct or indirect ordination methods) and arrange the plant assemblages along the gradient. We then applied different classification methods to test whether it is possible to detect discrete plant communities. We analyzed the secondary succession of birch forests in Slovenia, the process of autosuccession of Pinus brutia in Turkey, the altitudinal distribution of communities in rock crevices on silicate bedrock in Slovenia, the gradient of spruce planting in beech forest, the influence of the introduction of non-native tree species into forests, the macroecological and phenological development of weed vegetation in Europe, and the circum-Adriatic pattern of broadleaved ravine forests. The results show that, in most cases, the turnover of species composition along the gradient, according to the integrative concept, is due to species interactions. This enables us to detect and describe discrete plant communities in terms of the central European Braun-Blanquet method."

The Organismic and the Continuous theories are traditionally considered as antagonist in ecology studies. In this research, we make the floristic characterization of different forest communities and establish the corresponding classification, taking into account the approaches derived from the theories aforementioned. We used 1 ha plots to evaluate individuals bigger than 10 cm dbh (diameter at breast height). In each one of that plots, four sub-plots of 100 m2 were measured, to study all the spermatophyta in the understory. The data obtained were considered in an Enlarged Importance Index (EII), for each species in each plot. Then, the phytosociological relationships were established, according to the importance and appearance of all the species in all the plots and the results from conglomerate and multivariate analyses. We found a great unit of vegetation where the species Pentaclethra macroloba and Carapa guianensis are characteristic-dominant. In position of summit and hillside, an Alexa imperatricis Forest was identified. A valley type exists where a Catostemma commune Forest is present, and there is another valley with a Mora excelsa Forest. We found that Organismic and Continuous approaches could be complementary to get a better understanding of the tropical forest ecosystems.” (source : auteurs)Type de publication : périodique Référence biblio : Lozada J., Guevara J., Soriano P., Costa M., 2011 - The organismic and the continuous approaches applied to phytosociological relationships in a lowland neotropical forest, Venezuela.
