"Despite recognizing that contemporary spermatophytes produce desiccation-tolerant (DT) and desiccation-sensitive (DS) seeds half a century ago, accurately assigning a species to a specific category remains a significant challenge. Seed Information Database (SID) contains storage behavior data for almost 25,000 species, of which many are doubtfully assigned, posing limitations for applications in conservation and ecological understanding. Here, a theory of "mutual exclusivity" for seed traits is proposed and tested on 1692 species from 110 families with known records of DS, DT, and impermeable seed coat, i.e. physical dormancy (PY) and epicotyl dormancy. The analysis shows that genera-producing seeds of DS and PY exhibit a mutually exclusive relationship, thus PY genera produces only DT seeds. PY occurs in 228 genera, and extrapolating total numbers show that 19,959 species definitively produce DT seeds. DS and other classes of dormancy, including physiological, morphological and epicotyl dormancy, can coexist in numerous genera." (source : auteur) |
